| MILLENWORKS - LIGHT TACTICAL VEHICLES, UNMANNED GROUND VEHICLES, AND ADVANCED MOBILITY SOLUTIONS
MillenWorks (previously Rod Millen Special Vehicles Inc.) is a small U.S. based research and development company with expertise in fast-burn, high mobility vehicle solutions for the military. MillenWorks has over 20 years experience in designing high performance vehicles for demanding off-road use and qualifies as a small business interest.
INTERNALLY TRANSPORTABLE VEHICLES (ITV)
MillenWorks has teamed with partners like Lockheed Martin and AeroVironment to design and build a family of off-road vehicles capable of internal transport by CH-46, CH-53, and V-22 aircraft. RMSV's pioneering work on programs like Helo Transportable Tactical Multi Mission Platform (HTTMP), Joint Tactical Electric Vehicle (JTEV), Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Targeting Vehicle (RST-V) and Helo Transportable Tactical Vehicle (HTTV) helped establish the operating requirements for the latest generation ITV. Long after completion of the initial design and build phase with MillenWorks, the Naval Surface Warfare Center continues testing with several HTTV prototypes.
UNMANNED GROUND VEHICLES (UGV)
MillenWorks is quickly establishing itself as the premier house for designing, building and developing medium sized robotic ground vehicles. In 2001, MillenWorks was awarded the first of several UGV contracts working with Lockheed Martin and DARPA on the Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle (UGCV) program. This semi-autonomous hybrid electric vehicle leveraged many advanced technologies developed at MillenWorks including a tough carbon-aramid composite monocoque structure for enhanced survivability and rotating suspension arms that provide unparalleled mobility in a vehicle of this size and the unique capability of operation while inverted. Ongoing field-testing is planned through the end of CY2003.
In 2002, Lockheed Martin selected MillenWorks to lead design and development efforts for the Office of Naval Research Gladiator Tactical Unmanned Ground Vehicle (TUGV) program. This vehicle builds on the lessons learned on UGCV and previous ground vehicle programs. TUGV is slated to be fielded by the U.S. Marine Corps in 2006 and will provide Marines the ability to remote combat tasks such as reconnaissance, targeting, obstacle breaching, and direct fire. MillenWorks's team successfully edged out tough competition from General Dynamics Land Systems and SAIC for a Phase II award to build and test a technology demonstration model.
MAGNETORHEOLOGIC DAMPERS (MRD)
To address many of the mobility limitations of existing military platforms like the ubiquitous HMMWV and improve the potential of new vehicles, MillenWorks is developing a family of linear and rotary MR dampers. Using high bandwidth sensors and actuation logic, these dampers can provide an infinitely variable damping force within several microseconds of the vehicle encountering a terrain perturbation or initiating a handling maneuver. Unlike other MR damper providers, MillenWorks has devoted a great deal of effort into overcoming the challenges imposed by operating heavy vehicles over extreme off-road terrain such as extremely high shaft forces and velocities. MillenWorks utilized a custom shock dynamometer designed and built in house to thoroughly develop every component on the MR dampers. As a result, durability and consistent performance have become trademarks of MillenWorks's MR damper designs. Work is currently underway with the U.S. Army to retrofit a Stryker vehicle with MillenWorks's linear MR dampers for upcoming development. Two patents are currently pending for MillenWorks MR damper designs.
ADVANCED MODELING AND SIMULATION (M&S)
Using the open-architecture MATLAB / Simulink analysis environment MillenWorks has developed Full, Half and Quarter Vehicle Models of varying complexity. This solution provides cost-effective and validated simulation results with a large amount of reusable model code. MillenWorks also uses the SimMechanics suite for full vehicle dynamic simulation and co-simulation using real time controller models. These models are utilized alone or in conjunction with NATO Reference Mobility Model NRMM II for:
* Evaluation of obstacle negotiation capability
* Suspension performance characterization and optimization
* Vehicle handling and stability analysis
* Active or semi-active suspension control system development
* Dynamic simulation and controls-in-the-loop simulation (co-simulation) for developing and optimizing control algorithms. Real time control system rapid prototyping for implementing active systems on development hardware for real world system testing
* Go / No-Go evaluation: determines where and why a vehicle will become immobilized and how fast it can negotiate given terrain |
